It’s the season of indulgence. Whether it’s the stress of the holiday season with its expectations and extra gatherings, or the darkness, or the shift in the weather, it seems to be part of the season to pamper yourself and indulge in some extra treats. It seems like those extra treats show up in every corner of our lives, and it can be difficult to resist the temptation.
The problem is that those indulgences add up, and each one seems to open the door for three more. While building healthy habits takes time and consistency, unfortunately indulgent habits seem to almost form themselves. As Augustine of Hippo said, “Complete abstinence is easier than perfect moderation.” Humans crave comfort and sweetness and we all want to feel special and worthy. Treats and indulgences check all of those boxes for us.
And in truth, we do deserve a break every once in a while, right? We do deserve to enjoy ourselves, and to find joy and comfort in the season. Some of those indulgences are wolves in sheep’s clothing though. Giving your body extra sugar to fuel it actually short-circuits your metabolism and sabotages your physical and mental health. Blowing your budget will bite you when the bills come due. And we probably don’t even to need to mention hangovers.
Here is something to try. Try affirming your absolute worth in terms of your long-term (and short-term!) health. Take a few moments to write a list of things that make you happy. What are the things that bring that bubble of joy to your life? Start with the most obvious things, the things that jump right into your head, without taking any time to decide if they are “good” or “bad.” Do you love your morning latte? Or a new pair of shoes? Or sleeping in on the weekends? Chocolate cake? Write all those things down. Hopefully this exercise brings a smile to your face as you even think about those things!
Now, read that list again. When you read through your list again, try to write a couple of things next to each item that get at WHY these things make you happy. Again, try not to get caught up in the “goodness” or “badness” of each thing. Just write down the feelings or thoughts you have, and any insight into why those things made your list. Now go through your list, and with each item, ask yourself, “Does this truly affirm my worth, as a person seeking lifelong health wholeheartedly?”
See if you can find some substitutes for those indulgences that will get at those thoughts and feelings in a different way, in a way that will help you reach your goals rather than sabotage your goals.
Here are a few ideas to try:
Treat yourself to a small square when you are feeling deprived. Make sure you eat it slowly and pay attention to all your senses. Keep it to a minimum. Or alternatively, find a really beautiful new fruit to indulge in. Fresh figs, pomegranates, persimmons, or other local and seasonal fruits are true treats. Macadamia nuts are sweet and delicious, and also loaded with healthy fats, protein, antioxidants, copper, manganese, and thiamin.
Does skipping a workout make you feel like you’re getting away with something? Try replacing your regular workout with some kind of movement that you loved as a kid. Try jumping on a trampoline, going for a walk outside in a beautiful place, or dancing, anywhere! You can try giving yourself a challenge like,“I’m going to run to that tree,” or “I’m going to do all the exercise machines in the park before I finish my walk.” You can jump rope or do jumping jacks. The endorphins released when you move will compound with the joy you feel doing something that reminds you of fun and you’ll get double for your workout!
Try exploring some of the healthy options for indulgent warm treats like golden milk, cinnamon rooibos with coconut milk, or matcha tea. Or choose good coffee, without added sugar and before lunch!
A phone call, FaceTime, a text or email, snail mail, or a good old-fashioned coffee date with someone who loves you will help fill that cup.
Downtime and rest, excellent nutrition, plenty of water, and enough sleep will help keep your will power strong and you will know you ARE taking care of yourself in every way possible and you don’t need to indulge in anything that will sabotage your goals in order to feel worth it!
